How To Guide: Habits vs Resolutions

I am no fan of resolutions really.

I find that they can add pressure and expectation that, if not perfectly achieved, leads to a feeling of failure.

Resolutions tend to fail.

We run out of steam.

They become out of date.

They may not even get us to where we want to go.

I prefer habits.

Habits are a ‘one day at a time’ activity.

Habits don’t feel overwhelming.

Great habits can replace our bad ones.

Habits add up to a whole new way of being.

Habits can achieve a lot.

Research shows that new habits are formed if repeated 30 times. It takes 30 days to form great new habits. So think about what new habits will make the difference to your business.

Here are a few ideas to help you along the way:

  1. Self care habits – we all know that feeling in our businesses when we are burnt out, want to walk away or hide under the duvet. Create one daily habit that will build that care into your life – what ever works for you!
  2. Marketing habits – all of us can struggle with the need for consistency in our marketing especially with social media! Think about how to keep going and what habit would work e.g. setting up your social posts for the next day every evening or creating a weekly plan every Sunday evening.
  3. Financial habits – take the pressure off and avoid worry by creating new daily habits in your finances. Think about using software or an app to track daily mileage or receipts. I love Receipt Bank and Tripcatcher (both work with Xero too).
